Blanche Ely, behind outstanding performances from captains Krista Wade and Melinda Mackey, won its home opener by surprising Coconut Creek in four games to snap a 10-match losing streak to the Cougars.
The victory also gives the Tigers its first victory of the season after just three matches, and BEHS will be looking to go 2-2 when it travels to McArthur on Thursday. Blanche Ely seems on the road to improve from its 1-16 record a season ago.
"The girls are playing more together," second-year coach Gayle Kyle said. "They stepped it up today when they were under pressure. Even in the games that we lost, we were competitive. Krista, especially, was out-of-sight with the saves that she made today. I believe our expectations should be raised from what we've been before."
The Tigers established themselves early, taking a 2-0 lead into the third set before the Cougars made the match interesting by avoiding the sweep, winning Game No. 3 by a 25-19 margain.
But Blanche Ely retook command in the clinching fourth game, jumping all over the mistake-prone Cougars with a 19-9 start while executing its three-hit attack and overcoming a size advantage at the net for Coconut Creek. The deciding game ended at 25-16 Blanche Ely.
The game ended with Mackey tipping at errand Coconut Creek return to the Cougars' side of the floor from the net. Mackey finished with a game-high 25 service winners.
Fellow starters Jessica Gayle, Juliana Demard, Laisa Jean-Philippe, and sophomore newcomer Alissa Garcia also contributed outstanding, near-flawless play in defeating the Cougars. Rhain Farquar, Jessica Jeune-Louis, Alexis Hunter, and Verline Jean also made timely contributions off the bench for the Tigers.
